NEW Browser Information

Network EducationWare ( NEW ) is usually launched from a web browser page in the distance education course management website. When a connection is requested, the webserver will send a file of type application/nwc to your browser which passes it to your NEW client. If you are using Windows, then NEW automatically associates with these files during installation. If you are using Linux, then some special steps need to be taken for NEW to launch properly from the browser.

If there is a problem during installation that prevents this association from being properly created, or if some other application has associated itself with the "nwc" filetype, then some special steps need to be taken for NEW to launch properly from the browser. We will discuss these steps later in this document.

Browser: MOZILLA FIREFOX
(recommended)

Mozilla Firefox is a free opensource alternative browser that runs on many operating systems. We highly recommend this browser for use with NEW and the course management website.

When using NEW with Windows and the Firefox browser, after logging in, you connect to a live class by selecting the appropirate link. You will then see a dialogue box like the following:



You should choose to " Open with NEW_Config. " This will launch NEW on your computer and connect to the course.

If you are using the Linux operating system, then you will get the dialogue box below. Please skip to the instructions below the image.

If you are using Windows and do not see the option to "Open with NEW_Config", then NEW either has not been installed or it is not properly associated with the file type .nwc. To work around this, you should first try reinstalling NEW . If you still do not get the option and are seeing a dialogue like the following:



Choose "Open with" and click "Browse." For Windows, navigate to the location C:\Program Files\NEW\ and select TLMC.exe and hit OK. For Linux, navigate to the location /usr/local/NEW/ and select TLMC, click OK. You may want to click the "Do this automatically for files like this from now on" option. The click OK again to launch NEW .

Browser: INTERNET EXPLORER

If you are using the Internet Explorer browser and select the live class connection link, you may see a message like:



You should click on this information bar and choose "Download File."



Then choose "Open" to launch NEW and connect to class.



If you do not get the option to "Open" the .nwc file then NEW is not properly associated with this file type. Try reinstalling NEW .

If you are using the Opera browser, when you select the live class connection link, you will see a dialogue similar to:



Click "Open" to launch NEW and connect to the class/conference.
